Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is the foundational architecture of enterprise GenAI. Explore the anatomy of vector database poisoning and how adversarial documents lead to code execution.

Enterprise adoption of Generative AI centers on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): combining large language models with vector databases to answer user queries grounded in internal proprietary documentation.

However, RAG pipelines create a subtle and severe attack vector: Second-Order Prompt Injection via Vector Store Poisoning.

The Attack Anatomy

When an attacker submits an unverified document (e.g. a public resume, vendor quote, or support ticket) into an automated ingestion pipeline, the document is sliced into text chunks and embedded into high-dimensional vector space. By carefully crafting text with high semantic overlap with common user queries, an attacker ensures their malicious chunk is retrieved and injected directly into the LLM system prompt.

If the application subsequently permits the LLM to format markdown images, execute SQL queries, or invoke internal APIs, the injected chunk commandeers execution flow.

Architectural Hardening Blueprint

  • Pre-Ingestion Provenance Validation: Validate document origin, author identity, and HMAC integrity before chunking.
  • Isolated Vector Namespaces: Strict tenant isolation in vector indexes preventing cross-tenant chunk leakage.
  • Output Encoding & Markdown Sanitization: Strip untrusted markdown image tags and JavaScript schemes from model outputs before rendering in web browsers.
